The postage was probably included in the price of the things you
bought. You're still paying for it, either way.

Why? Why should you get a discount for something which costs them
*more* to do? If it's not sent registered the mail order company will
have no guarantee that the parcel ever reached you. An unscrupulous
person could take advantage of this and claim a refund.
