If my Psion 5 died, I'd have a lot more important things to worry about
than getting new keycodes for my software, like finding a few hundred
quid to buy a replacement.

It's only a pain if the machine dies suddenly, if you're just buying a
new one, you get the keycodes first. Car keys are also a pain,
especially when you lose them or lock them in the car, but it's a fact
of life that you have to lock your car.
