If the serial nmber is stored in PROM, it's simply a matter of the repair
department having a few motherboards with unprogrammed PROMs.

I'd be more concerened about replacing a £500 paslmtop and the data it
contained. Unless it was insured, in which case I'd include the cost of
replacement software in the claim.

So why is it still in use after several years? If it was such a bad solution,
peopel wouldn`t be buying software that used this system and the newsgroups
would be full of complaints about it.
