You could try another serial cable, as there might be a break in the cable which
is almost impossible to find.

OK so it's not that then.

Have you phoned someone using that phone line? What is the quality like?
If its OK (no crackles or buzzing) then you might have a dodgey modem or serial
port on the miggy. The only things I can suggest is to try the modem on another
computer to see if it works, and if it does get some sort of serial port
expansion card (Port Junior or Silver Surfer are pretty damn good). But be aware
that these need the correct clock port header in your A1200.
I know getting a port expansion is a bit extreme, but if your miggy's serial is
up the duff there is not a lot else you could do (apart from sending it for a
checkup and/or repair). Hope that I have made sense and this has helped mate.
