Sculpt4D had this manual protection system. It was a real nuisance in
use.
And it can be easily bypassed by any good hacker, who simply has to find
the call to the manual-checking routine and replace it by NOPs.
Fortunately it wasn't long before a cracked version of Sculpt4D
appeared, so that those of us who have legal copies can use the program
in peace. (As well as with a clear conscience).
Dongles (Lightwave) are equally unpractical in any multi-user environment
such as a college, as they can be stolen. And they are expensive.
I suspect chastity belts went out of fashion because the husbands kept
losing the key.
