depends on who the users are though, for example I use open source software
and i also use 'open source' help channels. get stuck with a program? I
juset surf the web and in next to no time have several leads that help me.
I'm also very intuitive and can puzzle most of these things out.

so, if there were more people like me, who download Linux from the FTP site,
who figure out the problems, then RedHat (for example) would make no money
and neither would any of these support channels.

in closing, the standard revenues for Open Source are very fragile

this threat certainly cuased me to double check all files that got uploaded
to my BBS when I ran it! I couldnt afford to lose my equipment (confiscation
of equipment is step numero uno when a BBS is raided)
