How's he supposed to get at the partition though? YOU FREAKS!?

It's easy, set the partition to 'automount' first, and then boot with no
startup-sequence. Run a disk utility from there: I keep my tools on
floppy and also on my SFS-formatted "Cache" partition where usually
errors won't kill the disk. Speed and flexibility ;)

I'd be interested to know exactly what you have running that could
be tinkering with your disks - it could well be a stack problem (do
you not run StackAttack?) if the disk *process* is crashing. You just
say that it asks you to insert the disk?

A better explanation of the problem would be in order..
