Subject:Lying down scan rates

Hello all,

I've had a problem for a while with my monitor losing sync after a while,
and last night I finally figured out why. It's my own fault, I'd been
playing with MonEd. I've now got a stable display, but I want more.

It's just clicked which settings affect the horizontal frequency of a
particular screenmode, and my monitor seems to be able to survive anything
that I throw at it (if it can't sync, I get either a corrupted display, or
no display at all). What I'd like to do is put more of a scientific edge to
my experimenting.

And so to my question. I assume that there are some mathematics involved in
working out the scan rates according to TOTCLKS and TOTROWS etc., but I
can't see a pattern.

Can anyone enlighten me so that I may pre-calculate which settings are
likely to give me the best results, without pursuing a complete trial end
error regime. I pretty good at figures work, so don't be afraid :o)

All the best

Steve.
