I lose a lot on my 16MB machine with P96 too, about the same amount in fact.

That screenmode should use 786,432 bytes of fast RAM. P96 seems to keep a
copy in fast even if it's in use on the gfx card - for good reasons though. I
don't know where the rest of the memory goes; you should lose some extra due
to background patterns and the like being rendered in full 24bit, but not that
much.

I do remember installing CGX 3 and gaining some memory back.. I can't test it
now as the installation doesn't seem to be working.
