Ethernet address, not IP address. 3coms have the "feature" of storing
their MAC address in non-volatile memory, presumably so if one dies you
can replace it with one with the same MAC address to save you having to
redo any bootp stuff you have lying around. This has the disadvantage that
occasionally they seem to forget it. I had to find a DOS boot floppy and
download 3com's tools to reset it...

Allegedly the hubs we have have the strange property that under some
circumstances they'll write corrupt entries to their ARP cache and then
never get round to noticing that something is rather wrong. This seems to
have happened in some strange combination with a single network segment
which has conspired to cause the 100Mbit machines on there to be able to
talk to themselves and nothing else. Coincidentally, the machines in
question happen to be owned by the student computer society.
