TypeSmith will convert PostScript fonts to Intellifont, and so will a
utility that came with ProPage.
But the loss of speed is due to the _mode_ of printing. If you send a
bitmap image to a printer it will always be slow. For plain text, you
send the actual ASCII characters and the printer does the work.
Best bet is probably a laser printer, I think they still have text mode.
My HP Laserjet does, and I use it to print text files from DOpus. Very
useful when you are programming and you want to go and sit in a
comfortable chair and mull over the code.
