All CDs have Reed-Solomon error correction built in. Data tracks also
use CRC checks as a second line of defence.
A data track can be re-read in case of uncorrectable error, an audio
track generally cannot, so any uncorrectable errors must be
interpolated. A single bit of error in a binary file can be fatal, so
the requirements are higher for data - the same as for a hard drive, in
fact.
This suggests that an AVI or AIFF file on a CD-ROM would give more
accurate playback than a CDDA file of the same music.
However, Plextor have developed a method of going back, searching for
the same data pattern, and doing a re-read, even on audio data. AFAIK no
hi-fi audio CD player can do this.
I think you will find R-S correction in hard drives, too, but less is
published about hard drive technology.
