Are you sure you could tell them apart blindfold?

If your CD player has a cold, hard sound, that again is likely to be a
problem with the output circuitry, or the input to the amplifier.

You also need to be sure when comparing that the volume levels are the
same. As CD sound has less noise, one tends to turn the volume up
louder, which again can give a harder sound with more distortion
(speaker cones and crossovers) and relatively less bass.
