Interesting posting, Andrew. I've never had a problem with letters
and numbers, but I do have a problem with shapes - specially human
faces, which I heard recently on TV are recognized by a specialized
section of the brain. Yet I could read fluently when I was 4.
Different part of the brain. I have great difficulty recognizing
different characters in a movie or a TV drama. I even have trouble
recognizing my own relations if I see them in a place where I don't
expect them.
A consequence is that I seldom greet friends I meet, as I so often
greeted total strangers who thought I was weird :-) So I wait until
they greet me, I say "Hi" etc., and I examine them while scanning
my mental database.
