As far as I've been able to find out, the default 800x600 is fixed
(it's set in the file that's used by sysgen, so I think the value is
hardcoded in the image file).
But, you can open up an intent media screen with a size different
from the default:
$ dev/ave/dsk/launch -w<width> -h<height>
The launch tool has a couple more options as well, whose meaning
I don't know.
