The accronym for the newest Video Toaster product line from NewTek,
which is currently limited to running on M$ NT work stations;
thus VTNT.
A short description of VTNT is that it is a PCI card designed for
un-compressed D1 video recording/playback directly to (a raid array
of) hard drives for Non-Linear video Editing (NLE). The stock
Input/Output interfaces support a variety of analog and un-compressed
digital A/V standards, both PAL and NTSC.
It also comes with a suite of software for compositing, digital
effects and editing. Respectively these are: Aura (originally TV Paint
on the Amiga :), a scaled down version of LightWave (originally
LightWave on the Amiga :), and Speed Razor (a contract port of a
Time-Line based windoze NLE package). A major strength of the system
is that all of the transitons and effects are done in software by
taking advantage of the buss and processor speeds now available
in commodity systems.
VTNT 1.0 has been shipping for about a year. It is limited to NLE work
only, as all effects, layering and transitions must be rendered.
VT 2.0 is nearing shipment though, and given a dual 600mhz+ processor
configuration, it is supposed to be capable of the real time
transitions and live switching found in the original (1989) Amiga
Video Toaster.
