Open InventorTM Released to Open Source Community
SAN JOSE, Calif., LinuxWorld Expo (August 15, 2000)-SGI (NYSE: SGI) today
announced it has released the source code for its Open InventorTM 3D
graphics toolkit to the open source community. Open Inventor is the de facto
standard for rapid development of graphics applications and is used in
almost every industry, including CAD, geosciences, medicine, academia,
chemistry and movie production.
Open Inventor is a full-featured object-oriented framework for building
interactive 3D graphics applications. It simplifies the software development
process and allows very rapid development of graphics applications. Simple
enough to be an integral part of many computer graphics courses taught at
the university level, Open Inventor powers thousands of production-quality
applications.
"Open Inventor is one of the most popular graphics toolkits in the world,"
said Kurt Akeley, Chief Technology Officer, SGI. "We have received numerous
requests for a Linux version of Open Inventor. By open sourcing this
toolkit, we are making it available on Linux and at the same time enabling
this large and very active user community to study, understand and enhance
the toolkit."
"Open Inventor is an important tool for the creation of our weather-related
products," said Joseph S. D'Aleo, Chief Meteorologist, WSI Corporation.
"This open sourcing gives us the freedom to perfect and enhance the Open
Inventor toolkit, thereby strengthening our ability to offer our customers
outstanding solutions."
"The release of Open Inventor to the open source community will help
jump-start interactive graphics on Linux," said Dr. R. Bowen Loftin,
Director of the Virtual Environments Research Institute, University of
Houston.
