I'm afraid I can't help regarding the proxy problem, but have you tried
another FTP client instead of AmFTP? It may be that AmFTP just doesn't like
your FTP servers! AmFTP, whilst far more stable than every other FTP client
I've used (with the exception of OpusFTP) can be a bit finicky on a Windows
NT server.
Download the mFTP-II demo from http://www.vapor.com and see if that works
through it.
Not understanding fully what a proxy is, I can't really help, but as it
connects through the proxy I can't see (with my limited knowledge, someone
please inform me if this is wrong!) why it would fall over on a LIST command
when it connects alright.
