cdwriters are usually better cd-reading devices too. what is affecting this
issue is that the cdrom media just happens to absorb (or not reflect) enough
light for your CDROM. All CD disks are made from different stuff.
for sure, if your friend did copy the disk and burnt it back on, say a TDK
or BASF CD, you'll be able to read that new CD
