CCS is the name of an extension to the original SCSI (aka SCSI-1)
standard, and CCS was later incorporated into SCSI-2.
CCS goes back to the late eighties, so either the hd and scanner
are old or the manufacturers have not updated their firmware.
As for the 1230scsi device, the newest version (to my knowledge)
is 8.5. Use one of the utilities mentioned by Neil to check this.
Is your friend using the BlizKick utility from Aminet? If not
then get it for him. It will fix bugs in the OS and improve his
Amiga in many ways. One of its features is the ability to replace
the old 1230scsi device with a newer version. Phase5 used to have
new versions on their website. I'll send you v8.5 if he needs it.
