use Xconfigurator, xf86config or xf86cfg

remove the 8bit modes, the 24bit and the 32bits. in that final screen
section , before the Mode lines stick

LILO works great for booting any OS on PC's, just be careful if you install
other Os's (like Win NT) as they happily delete the boot partition info
