I reckon it's pretty good. I ran a BBS for 9 years, and 90% of all
menu commands were run on Arexx scripts. Nobody ever said it was
slow, and a few remarked how fast it was. True, I have a 68040 vpu
which helps. And I did call in some C support utils for creating file
lists for display.
But as you've said, it depends on the context activity. If a program
is interactive and constantly waiting for user input, then the time
taken for the user to consider and enter replies will outweigh the
time taken for screen displays.
