There's nowt wrong with 3.3.6. Depending on what gfx card you have, some
people will be better off sticking with that version. F'rinstance, my PC at
home has a 3D Rage Pro card which is supported by Utah-GLX under 3.3.6 but
not supported for 3D acceleration at all under 4.0.1. The crappy PC that I'm
writing this mail on at work has a Trio64V2, which is not supported by 4.0.1.
Plus, IMHO, XFree86 4.0.1 is still rather buggy.
