I know car analogys don't work, but...
If your car somehow doesn't start, you lose the ability to drive it, too
(unless you are a car mechanic ;).
You may be able to fix a few things, but in many cases you'll
need a specialist or at least someone who is experienced.
We on this list are (more or less) computer experts, but you
need to see it from the perspective of a "normal" user.
You might not know how to repair a car and the mechanic might
not know how to install a new harddrive.
Like you don't need to know how a combustion engine exactly works to
drive a car, you don't need to know how an OS works to use a computer.
The more you know, the more problems you can solve yourself, but
it's impossible to be an expert on everything.
