It controls various options for the commands. Not got a full list, but
'opt h' for the TYPE command shows the file in HEX instead of ASCII.
Similarly, 'opt d' for the DIR command only shows the directories in that
directory.
Basically, the same as typing 'Type <file> HEX' or 'Dir RAM: DIRS' :-)
