Official description from "man rpm"...

NAME
rpm - Red Hat Package Manager

DESCRIPTION
rpm is a powerful package manager, which can be used to
build, install, query, verify, update, and uninstall indi-
vidual software packages. A package consists of an
archive of files, and package information, including name,
version, and description.

Basically, a way of packaging all the files for a program in a way that
you can easily install and uninstall them. A single file that you can
install/uninstall/upgrade, and easily check to see if you've got all the
relevant files you might need. (And you often find problems with that,
believe me. Lost track of how many times I've tried to install an RPM on
linux and found all sorts of failed dependencies, frequently because it
seems to be checking for version X rather than "version X or later". Grrr
;)

Does that explain it?
