SmarTone, BT's Hong Kong joint-venture, is liaising with computing
firm Sun Microsystems and German high-tech manufacturer Siemens to
spearhead the development of Java technology-based wireless
interactive services on GSM mobile networks in Asia.
Sun Microsystems is the pioneer in Java technology, which is a
universal platform for network computing. Siemens plans to introduce
the first Java technology-enabled handset to meet customers' demand
for sophisticated mobile communications by the first half of next
year.
Ian Stone, CEO of SmarTone Mobile Communications, said: "Mobile
communications nowadays mean more than just voice. The demand for
data
transmission in both text and graphic formats is ever increasing.
"Java technology, coupled with WAP and GPRS, will enable customers to
enjoy extremely rich and sophisticated interactive content on their
Java technology-enabled mobile phones over a speedy wireless network."
Java technology also enables a higher level of security, which is
critical to the development of mobile commerce - an integral element
facilitating the application of a wide array of future mobile
services.
Ian added: "We expect many more interesting and useful applications
and services to emerge when Java technology-enabled phones become
readily available, and when more application service providers (ASPs)
join our league."
BT has a 20 per cent stake in SmarTone.
