I've bought several things this way, and it's more or less accepted
that the money goes first. In my case, the people I've dealt with have
sent the goods the same day I sent the money, and it all worked out
OK.
I've also sold this way, and posted the goods when the cheque arrived.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never been cheated, and I certainly
wouldn't cheat anyone myself.

Not at all, you don't know the other person in most cases. With one
chap who was very unsure of this method, I got him to ring me at
work (I'm a Prison Officer) to verify I was who I said I was. I'm not
sure if that reassured him or not! ;-)
