Maybe that should be moved to another page. Is it really the most
important and interesting thing on the site? ;-)

I think you can have as many and as big pictures, audio etc as you like,
so long as people know what's coming. For example, "Click here to see a
high res version (2 Megs)"
It's when the 2 Meg version comes up on a page you expected to see at
once that you start to dislike the designer.
My theory is that there are 3 kinds of page:
Navigation pages, like the index page, should load in a few seconds
Information pages, the meat of the site, can take longer because the
viewer is now definitely interested (maybe up to 30 secs) (mug shots go
here)
In-depth pages like high res images, for the seriously interested
viewer/listener who doesn't mind waiting a while
IMO the worst thing of all is a Flash animation on the index page.
