Subject: | Changing from FFS to SFS or PFS (or from SFS/PFS to FFS etc.) |
Someone (or more) asked something like this:
>> How involved of a process is it to switch from FFS to SFS?
Answer: (I will refer to FFS and SFS in this example)
1. Backup all data on the FFS partition that you wish to change to SFS.
(backup to a CD-R or a empty partition, or use a backup util etc.)
(only use a backup util that copy the CONTENTS of the partition,
i.e the files/dirs etc)
2. Next use HDToolbox (or preferably the util you used to setup your HD)
Change the filesystem from FFS to SFS.
(copy the SFS filesystem file to to the L: directory first)
Then tell your HD prep util to save the changes.
3. Reboot you Amiga. PLEASE DO IT, the system must recheck/startup
the HD, otherwise the changes will not be noticed.
4. Format the SFS partition, it should be non-dos/unknown/unformated etc
You can use the AmigaOS format command, either from shell or WB menu.
Or in the case of SFS use the util SFSFormat
(it has a several nice options, like making the delete dir vissible:)
You only need to do a quick format.
5. Copy your data back to your new SFS partition.
You can do the copying by hand if you want to (I did with Opus).
Just make sure that EVERYTHING is copied, including the disk.info icon.
And make sure that the files are cloned,
in other words that protection bits and comments are copied as well.
You have to do this procedure for all partitions you wish to change.
The System/Workbench/Boot partition is tricky since you need
a second boot partition, that you can use while you change the
filesystem and reformat the partition and copy the stuff back.
Once that is done all you need is to reboot and SFS/PFS/whatever
should happily boot you system partition. :)
*end*
PS! Can any of the HD guru's on this list fix any mistakes in this text,
and possibly add it to some kind of guide for beginners etc?
Or perhaps someone can post it on Amiga.com etc?
Would be nice with a general guide there...
Kind regards,
Roger Hgensen...
