Could you not just subtract each value that you have
to work out the rate of change?
For instance, say the speed of the motor gives you a
value of 134 and then 234, your rate of change would
be 100.
I used something similar in a project that I was doing
for college (I've just passed it today, :D ) where I
had to trigger an event whenever the rate of change in
a signal was over a certain value.
