Yes, I have sometimes the same start problems with tunnel, too.

Hmm... I have not checked the code, but I use a 16Bit X server, too.
On my machine it mostly runs (surely more than 9 out of 10 times).
But *sometimes* it has the strange behaviour you reported above...
