Or some hardware did not like being probed, some isa cards can die massivly
when scanned.
Try pulling everything that you dont need out of the machine and try again.
You did make that backup boot disk that teh installer told you to dident
you,.. if pulling the hardware fails you might need it.

Is that really needed ?, most bios will boot from a ide drive, just use
the boot disk or the cd, both might just cause problems.
You might also have to change the boot order, (in bios), some systems try
the ide/cdrom/usb/floppy in that order, so you might be booting from the
wrong device. Change teh sequence so you can boot from floppy or cdrom,
and only check the ide ports last.

You think that will make things better,... windblows goes to great lengths
to try and distory itself at random intervals.
I have been trying to (update), a win98 machine with teh online thinge
from micro$oft, but after a few hours of downloading, ie5 crashes and the
setup fails,.. so i try again, and again and again, then i boot into linux
and all is well until i let MS code run on my machine again.
