Because of the limitations of the C language :-) GPL people tend to
be quite smart so they try to squeeze the last drop of "value", be
it performance or comfort, out of the language. This leads to
code which is quite optimal for the cause but which sometimes
bends some rules (for example, which compiles only with GCC
and sometimes even only with GCC on x86 :-)
