I was going to wait until it was finished...but seeing as the topic has come
up:
Wayne Martin and I have been working on an AmigaVP compressed archive
file format called AmiPak (files are .amp). The format features several
advantages over any existing format and codec software will be available for
platforms other than the AmigaVP. In addition to AmiPak format, the GUI based
version will also deal with bzip, gzip, tar, zip, and lha files. Here are some
of the advantages:
* Compression ratio higher than any other popular compressed
archive format.
* Speed comparable to other popular archive formats
* Scalable memory requirements (more mem=faster)
* Data Recovery: The file can be missing the start, end, or
chunks from the middle and files/file segments can still
be extracted.
* Support for package installs from compressed file
* Support for self-extracting
* Unlimited embedded text infos
* Unlimited embedded compressed image infos
We're still working on some of the format details, but in the next
month should have a beta release out.
