Hi everyone...

I am not a market strategist or analyst, nor do I claim to know what really
is important to manufacturers in terms of costs et al. Further, I am not a
proponent of Microsoft's Windows software, nor am I an opponent to it.
Microsoft builds technology; some of it good, some of it is bad, lots of it
ubiquitous. Please don't go nuts and respond to this message with how bad
their technology is or other statements that simply indicate "how much you
love to hate them." I think we all know, agree, etc., and it just adds
noise to the quality signal that should be sent to the open amiga mailing
list. Having said that, I will attempt to increase the signal and reduce
noise on my part, as well.

Personally I don't really care what the underlying Operating System really
is, as I feel it is basically just some commodity component. What I care
about is the ability to run on top of any operating system and on top of any
microprocessor. The Ami/Tao/Elate technology enables the former in hosted
mode (hence their choice of digital environment rather than operating
system), while the VP technology enables the latter. This is great and
kudos to the Tao-Group for developing it!

However, I'd like to point out that the success of the VP technology is
related, yet independent to the success of Amiga's Digital Environment.
This independent aspect of VP (i.e., it could be used on systems other than
Ami's DE) is what intrigues me. That is, I wouldn't mind pouring effort
into making VP a free, open source based technology that could be used on
other systems besides Ami/Tao. The by-product of this work, of course, is
that it may assist Ami/Tao, too. If that is the case then great, and I hope
Ami/Tao succeeds. However, if Ami/Tao go belly up with their efforts, then
I can live with the fact that my efforts on VP probably wont be lost, as the
fundamental idea of it is applicable to, say, embedded Linux/VxWorks/QNX
etc.

Cheers,
Marc
