If you don't want anybody poking around your config, make it read only
for the rest of the world. Or even readable only for you, if you are so
picky. chmod 600 should do.

Is that so much computing demanding? Could it be done in another way,
while keeping the human readable config file?

Well designed apps normally have small config files, and these should be kept small by design.
Specially if you're going to run the app in a cell phone.
