Probably this has to do with save-under in the XFree. It is a method so the X
server keeps track of the regions wiht are covered by other windows and puts
them back when needed. On XFree 4.0 this is by default off. On XFree86 3.3 it
was on I think.
I don't remember anymore how this can be turned on again in XFree 4.0.
