I could read from unit0 but not from unit1 where I had a friends crashed
pc hd on. On the other hand his hd could actually have been broken and
you could be right. Anyhow I didn't have time to code an scsi tool so I
never managed to see if it was the rdb or the hd's fault it wouldn't read.

No, but as I say the hd could be that the had was broken.

Sufficient information can be found on ftp or from those cd-r reference
books which are also free from their respective manufacturers.
