Category System
3D Action
This category is for a game like Doom where the emphasis is set firmly on
action within a 3D environment.
3D Adventure
This category is for a game like Mercenary where the emphasis, on balance,
is placed on finding keys and puzzle solving, within a 3D environment.
3D Combat Sim
This category is for games like Carrier Command or Midwinter where combat
is simulated in some detail, within a 3D environment.
Action Adventure
This category is for games that fall somewhere between Action games and
Adventure games. Or to put it another way, Den wasn't prepared to classify
Flashback as a Platform game, and I suppose that's fair enough.
Action Strategy
This category is for games like Steel Empire where in addition to making
strategic choices you have to get your hands dirty and join the action.
Adventure
This category is for games like Zork, Bureaucracy, Beneath A Steel Sky,
Monkey Island and Myst, where you are progressing through a game by
solving puzzles without the use of your legendary arcade skills. It might
be text only, have static graphics or have a character which you can move
around the game.
Beat-em-up
Oh come on! The emphasis is placed on giving another character a damned
good slapping!
Combat Sim
This category is for games like UFO: Enemy Unknown, Hostages or Laser
Squad, where within a 2D environment a detailed simulation of Combat takes
place. .....and yes, I know Hostages has a 3D section!
Driving
Could be a Motorcycle game like Super Hangon or cars like Hard Drivin',
you get the idea.
Flight Sim
This category applies to games like Falcon and Gunship 2000, where flight
is simulated with a certain level of realism.
General Action
This category applies to action based games that don't readily fit into
the other categories, like Wings and Sword of Sodan.
Management Sim
This category is for games like Powermonger, Populous Civilization and
Millenium 2.2 where you are controlling the affairs and destiny of your
people from a god-like position.
Miscellaneous
Platform
This category is for games like Prince of Persia and Impossible Mission
where you're spending a lot of time climbing and jumping, and most likely
falling to a messy death.
Puzzle
Ah, the enigmatic one. Gazing at the screen with your brow furrowed and
your mind confused? Probably a puzzle game, then. Examples would be
Lemmings, and erm.... Lemmings 2.....
RPG
This category is for Role Playing Games, like Dungeon Master and Hired
Guns where your character or characters have various attributes that will
improve with experience, enabling them more easily to achieve their aims.
Shoot-em-up
This category is for games ranging from Space Invaders to Turrican and
Uridium 2. The emphasis is on blasting.
Sport
This category ranges from footy games like Sensible World of Soccer to
Pool Sims like Archer Maclean's Pool. You will notice that each,
unsurprisingly, involves sport.
Strategy
This category could be for stodgier games like Ardennes '44, or relatively
sexy titles like Battle Isle or Full Metal Planette. The emphasis though,
is on making decisions on a Strategic or possibly Operational level
(impressed, huh?) that will lead your forces to victory. No! Not
Cannon Fodder!
