Golden Axe, hmmmm.... Sorry, but this just isn't my sort of game.
Basically you choose which character you wish to play, a Dwarf (with a
golden axe), a human male or a human female, and you advance sideways
through the levels, bashing everything you encounter until it is dead.
That's pretty much it really. The scrolling is pretty poor in that you need
to be right against the edge of the screen before it advances, thus making
you vulnerable to attacks from enemies that you can't see properly, and
the sprites are brightly coloured, which may be technically impressive,
but for my money makes things look rather less convincing. I don't know
about the technical side of it, but when games employ these 32 colour (?)
sprites, as in Mercs or Street Fighter, it seems to me that the animation
becomes proportionally less realistic. In addition they often look like
cardboard cut-outs suspended over a lower quality background. It maybe
that Golden Axe is an extremely faithful conversion to the original arcade
game, but I just can't see the appeal myself, and therefore have to give
this game a big thumbs down. My son thinks it looks better than the Sega
version, and you do get to jump on the occasional creature, use magical
smart bombs, and beat up pretty much everyone along the way. If this
floats your boat maybe it's a game for you, but I doubt it.
