When you make an image of the CD, you're copying it byte-for-byte
sequentially, and you're writing the file byte-for-byte sequentially to a
single file. When you start copying separate files, the CD-ROM's laser has
to jump all over the disc, which is a lot slower than simply reading the
disc in a stream, which is what it was originally designed for (As in
audio CDs)
