new ROMS (plus the incurred cost) would have indeed been the ideal
solution. I wonder how much this was not thought about :-|
anyway, I still recall having to boot workbench 1.3 et al from floppy
disks..... over a minute for the A500 to boot up. I'm not going to
complain about my A1200 boot time which is still a factor of 3 faster than
my gf's WinME box (whoah, they more than halved boottime, still slow!)
my A1200 boot time which is factor of 20 faster than a Tru64 Unix server,
factor of 5 faster than standard RedHat 7 distribution, factor of 8 faster
than a Solaris8 box.

ummm...people expect MORE from their machines each year, but expect the
setup time to be same of faster? get real, you've got to live with one
side of the coin, or the other
incidentally, have you ever tried cutting/improving your boot time?
a HUGE amount of time is spent copying large envarc:'s to env:
if you install "happyenv" it slices boottime down by several seconds
likewise, you can reduce resets to just one (I'm not sure if I'm bothered
to go ahead with that, as its only on cold-start that i have 2 resets, its
just one reset the reset of times), you can also remove any useless stuff
from startup-sequence/user-startup. I reduced my WBStartup from 23 tools
to just 5. my system is just as productive (oh, and 5x more stable! 8-) )
