jumper-protection. with jumper in place you can write to the ROM,
without it you cannot write. therefore you can make sure your system is
clean, insert jumper, boot into very basic mode and perform the upgrade,
then shutdown and remove jumper.

the PowerPC cards with FlashROMs - no harm (so far) has come to them.
..hmmm, there hasnt been an update for ages for that - there again, the
cards work fine! :-)
