Hmmmm. That's arguable :-) Surely the drive was already in a
'damaged' state, and switching it off merely showed up the state it
was in? In fact any strain would be increased at the moment of
switching on again, not when switching off. If you didn't switch it
off, the damage would still be there but remain hidden :-)
You've shown up a debatable point in this discussion, but I won't
argue it further.
