It's an attribute, not a "tag". And something that's required these days
too,
technically.

Evils of JavaScript, number 14: screwing about with the browser's status
bar.
It's there to show you where you're going to go if you click on a link. With
so
many pages about that randomly send you off to all sorts of places (and
we're
not just talking about porn sites, though they are one of the worst
offenders, so
I've been told), it's good to know you're not going to be sent off to some
other
site when you least expect it because some git hid the address.

And if you need to give people more information about where they're going,
for example you've got a strange icon that takes you to a links page but
looks
more like a goat, then you probably need to rethink your design. (This may
not
apply to sites about goats, of course).
