It's thee to give status information, that's why it's called a status

Image links are easy to deal with, you've already mentioned the
necessity of the ALT text. Most browsers display the ALT text when you
leave the pointer over an image.
AWeb will always show the URL if you press the shift key while the
pointer is over the link, I don't know if other browsers do this.
