I had this the other day when I swapped my hard disks around. The sample I
used in the sound prferences no longer existed, so it came up with this
error. Check the "sample:" path/filename in the sound preferences editor.

I think you'll probably find that this is a datatype problem rather than
hardware, replacing the sound preferences editor won't make any difference.
Check that
SYS:Classes/Datatypes/sound.datatype is present, also a Wave (wav) datatype is
in Devs:datatypes. As for MP3's what are you using to play these? a datatype
or another program?
