Thanks Neil. I don't have Executive but I do have TaskX which can
kill listed tasks. But I'd forgotten I have it. Doh! It's an
example of how one can get into an irritable tizzy and stop thnking
sensibly. But Amiga software seldom annoys me, unlike PCs.

But I do wonder why that abort button wasn't programmed to cause an
interrupt at any time. The time you most want to 'abort' is when it
hangs.
