Subject: | PowerFlyer & MakeCD (Buffer Under-Run Problems) |
Hello everyone 8-D
REF: PowerFlyer & MakeCD (Buffer Under-Run Problems) HELP !!!
I'm using MakeCD3.2b. All my drives are connected to a PowerFlyerZ-IV
and I'm experiencing all kinds of difficulties with regard to buffer
under-run with my CDRW: It normally gets as far as writing the first 7
megabytes to the disk and then the buffer empties (buffer under-run).
I am experiencing buffer under-run in both 'Test Mode' and when
'Burning For Real'.
MakeCD then just sits there doing nothing until I abort. I've only
just encountered buffer under-run problems since upgrading to a
PowerFlyer Z-IV 32 bit EIDE/FastATA IDE controller. The best I can run
my drives in is PIO mode 3, since my machine is not overly fast
(040/25Mhz), 64 megabytes of fast-ram.
I've tried all sorts of solutions:
20.4GB HD (Primary Master, Unit 0) - PIO Mode 3
48X CD-ROM (Primary Slave, Unit 1) - PIO Mode 3
CDRW (Secondary Master, Unit 2) - PIO Mode 3
Iomega Zip (Secondary Master, Unit 3) - PIO Mode 3
One reader recommended I placed the CDRW on the same channel on the
same channel as my HD (which I have also tried):
20.4GB HD (Primary Master, Unit 0) - PIO Mode 3
CDRW (Primary Slave, Unit 1) - PIO Mode 3
48X CD-ROM (Secondary Master, Unit 2) - PIO Mode 3
Iomega Zip 100 (Secondary Slave, Unit 3) - PIO Mode 3
Still I have the problem with buffer under-run.
I've also tried throttling both my HD and CDRW back to PIO mode 0 from
the 'FastATAPrefs' software (still buffer under-run occurs). I've even
tried booting without 'No-Startup-Sequence' and just enabling
'Setpatch' and then running the 'FastATA.driver' (to ensure no tasks
are gobbling up valuable CPU time) and then starting MakeCD but to no
avail: still I am experiencing 'Buffer Under-Run). 8-(
I provide all neccessary information below regarding software /
hardware settings:-
Make & Model of CDRW, MakeCD Driver Used:
The make & model of my CDRW is a Memorex CDRW-2216. I am using the
CDR_SCSI3_ATAPI driver. This I used prior to upgrading to a PowerFlyer
Z-IV so I know it works fine.
Burning Speed:
This has been set automatically by MakeCD. I am using the default
settings (slowest).
Buffer Size:
I am using the default buffer size which MakeCD has set up. I've also
ticked 'Ignore Overflow' in the 'Hardware Compatability Settings'
since my CDRW recognizes buffer overflow intelligently (the CDRW has
it's own internal 1 megabyte buffer as well).
Hard Disk Block Size, Hard Disk Buffer Size (HDToolBox):
The partition I use for creating ISO images is set to a block size of
512. Hard disk buffer size on all partitions is set to 30.
Mask & MaxTransfer Settings (HDToolBox):
Mask is set to: 0XFFFFFFFE on all partitions.
MaxTransfer is set to: 0X0001FE00 on all partitions.
Additional Notes:
I'm not running Executive: since it causes problems with MakeCD.
I never had problems with buffer under-run before: it's only since
upgrading to a PowerFlyer Z-IV. As far as I understand, buffer
under-run is caused when data is being burnt to the given disk faster
than the ISO image may be read from the source drive. I can't decrease
the writing speed any further, since I'm using the slowest speed
possible already !
I am at a complete loss to find a possible solution, and have
exhausted all other possibilities. Any suggestions would be most
welcome. HELP !!!!
